Our Porcelain Cameos

Our cameos are individually handcrafted in our own studio from a fine kind of porcelain, known as jasper-ware, which is obtained from mineral oxides mixed with water.

After the finest pieces have been selected, our porcelain cameos get fired up to 1200°C. This process produces a hard, fine-grained, unglazed and slightly translucent stoneware cameo, which is then finished by hand by our skillful Artisans with the  aid of an instrument called bulino, which is a fine chisel that helps to bring up the line of the designs and enhances the harmony of the reliefs.

This extraordinary technique is known, as the French say, Engobes, and was firstly developed by the Egyptians more than 3000 years ago. We've been the first firm to realize this product in 1990's, with the aim to create a sustainable product which would have allowed us to suspend the manufacturing of shell cameos, since many of the species used to realized it are highly endangered.
